She opened her front door and walked out the house as she heard Dexter’s car pulled over their garage. He hugged her, so did his wife. Kirana gave the bag of souvenirs she held. Vivian happily shrieked and accepted it.
“Are you just arrived?” Vivian asked. Kirana nodded.
“How was your vacation?” Dexter enthusiastically asked.
“It was fun.” She shrugged.
“Come, let’s talk about it inside.” Vivian opened their house door. Kirana nodded. Dexter wrapped one of his hands around his best friend’s shoulder.
“Are you okay? Do you get what you expected while you were there?” Dexter sarcastically asked. Kirana chuckled. He would never let this one go.
“Seriously, Dex? That’s all the best you can say?” Kirana teased.
“If you listen for him a whole day, you will understand why I need a lot of patience to live with him.” Vivian rolled her eyes. Kirana laughed.
“Hey, hey. Just because you two are women and I’m alone here, you both fight against me?” Dexter narrowed his eyes.
“That’s what we called woman solidarity, Dex.” Kirana chuckled. She and Vivian did a high-five. He let them got into the house while he was approaching the car. Both women walked to the kitchen.
“You’ll have dinner with us, won’t you?” Vivian asked. Kirana shook her head. She sat on one of the chair surrounding their dining table.
“I have had dinner in the airport. Thank you.”
“We bought a lot of food. You didn’t need to worry about taking my food or Vivi’s.” Dexter put some groceries bags on the counter.
“Or the baby’s.” Vivian added as she touched her belly.
“Or the baby’s” Dexter corrected himself. Kirana amusedly laughed.
“No, thank you. I just want to sleep.” She declined again.
“A cup of hot chocolate, maybe?” Vivian offered. She stood up and walked to the counter.
“No, thank you.”
“So, you came here meeting us just to show your tired face and then go home to sleep? Seriously, Ki? Why don’t you just put the souvenirs in front of our gate?” Dexter raised both of his eyebrows.
“A whole day he has that kind of mood. Three days without you.” Vivian rolled her eyes.
“Sorry for giving you such a hard day, Vivi.”
“It’s nothing. I have had the worse than this one.” Vivian giggled. She looked at one of the cabinet. “What about stay until his mood’s getting better. If you don’t want any hot chocolate, what about hot tea?” She showed Kirana a box of tea bags.
“Okay.” Kirana gave in.
Vivian showed her a sonograms of their twelve weeks baby. Kirana amazed and asked some questions about it. They answered all excitedly. When they asked her about the places she visited, Dexter surprised when she talked about Merlion, Thai restaurant, the five-star hotel’s swimming pool, and Universal Studio.
“All I know you never want to hanging around on a vacation. You choose to stay at the hotel room. If you don’t have these pictures, I won’t believe you.” Dexter stared at Kirana’s phone screen.
“I’m wondering, is it true Kirana doesn’t like hanging around?” Vivian asked. Kirana and Dexter nodded at the same time.
“It’s unfortunate to go on vacation if you just stay in the hotel room.” She obviously could not believe it.
“Glad I have a wife who shares the same opinion with me.” Dexter reached his wife’s hand and kissed her knuckle. Kirana giggled.
The pictures on her phone had been arranged in the special folders. All the photographs when she was in Singapore were put together in a folder. It would be easier for her to show it to anyone who asked about her vacation. She was glad Romeo insisted to take her pictures. Now she had proofs that she was really gone to that country.
Even though she regretted she did not have a picture with Romeo or secretively took his picture, she could not turn back the time. They had no future together. She had to go back to her country and he to his country. It was the perfect decision.
“Okay. It’s nice to talk to you both. I need to go back now.” Kirana yawned. She looked at Dexter with a gaze that told him to let her go home. He just sighed.
“Again, thank you for the souvenirs, Ki.” Vivian gratefully said. She touched the bag.
“You’re welcome, Vivi.” Kirana stood up.
“You shouldn’t have to do this. Thank you, Ki.” Dexter said as he stood up.
“No problem, Dex.” Kirana said. He came closer. “No. I know the way out. You don’t need to walk me out. Stay with Vivi.”
“You are sucks today.” Dexter complained. Kirana chuckled as she walked out of their kitchen. The sentence was the sentence she usually said when she was irritating. Dexter imitated her.
Before she reached the front door of Dexter’s house, Kirana stopped abruptly. She groped into her pocket and could not find her house key. She was thinking where the last time she saw it. She shook her head and smiled. She held it when she was sitting in the dining chair. She walked back to the kitchen.
“Thank you, Ki. No problem, Dex.” Vivian said angrily. “I’m sick seeing both of you acted as if you are just friends but you can’t stop touching!”
Kirana came to a halt just before she got into the kitchen. She leaned into the wall. One of her hands was on her chest. Her heart nearly stopped beating listened to the words. Did she mishear it?
“We’re just friends, Vivi. You know that. And you don’t mind about that all this time.”
“I don’t mind because I want you to be mine. I want to be your wife. That’s why I hold back and never say a word about your friendship. If I do mind, will you choose me out of her? You won’t. You will choose her.” Vivian argued. “But now everything is different. I’m your wife. I have rights to ask you to care about my feelings.”
“She’s my friend since childhood, Vivi. Of course, we are close. We’re growing up together. What’s wrong with you? You are nice and sweet with her. Where are these complains came from?”
“I can’t take it anymore. I can’t, Dexter! You can’t see her again. Ever!”
“But, why not?” He astonishingly asked.
“Because I’m hurt seeing you’re too close. I don’t like the way you look at her and touch her!” She screamed angrily.
“Turn your voice down, honey. Kiki stays in next door. I don’t want her listen to all of this.”
“Why don’t you want her to listen to all of this? You afraid she’ll get hurt? So, you choose to care of her feeling instead of your wife’s feeling?”
“That’s not what I mean. Oh. She left the key. I’ll go and give the key to her. She must be looking for this.” She heard the sound of a chair moved.
“You don’t have to, Dex. I’m here.” Kirana stepped into the kitchen.
He saw two couple of eyes broadened as they surprised seeing her there. Vivian glanced at her husband, and then looked back at Kirana. She opened her mouth to speak, but she closed it again. Dexter stared at her with guilty gaze and said his sorry in silence. Kirana smiled.
“Don’t look at me that way. I’m fine. What you just said is right, Vivi. If I was marrying him, I’d done the same thing as I saw my husband too close to other woman. Even though she was his friend since they were a child.”
“I,” Vivian quietly said. Kirana turned toward Dexter.
“Don’t treat your wife too hard. She is right.” Kirana took the key from Dexter’s hold. “She’s your wife. You have to make her your priority.”
“Ki,” Dexter said.
“We’re still friends, Dex. I’m still your friend, Vivi. If you need anything, I lived next door. But, I’m staying away for a while. I’m sorry, I make you arguing. I don’t mean to ruin your relationship. I really don’t.” Kirana stepped back. “Again, thank you for the tea, Vivi.”
Kirana turned around and walked the firmly steps out her best friend’s house. She let her tears falling down when she was in her room. After she lost Romeo, now she lost one of her best friends. Maybe God had started her punishment.
