Kirana looked at the two mound brown soil in front of her with blank eyes. A week before she was having breakfast with her parents. Their laughs still echoed in her ears. Three days after that moment, an accident killed them. A truck driver was sleepy, drove the high-speed truck, and then hit the car where her parents were. The driver was only slightly injured, but they died immediately.
With fast processing, as they did not want to delay, she and her sister decided to draw their indictment for the driver, following their lawyer’s advice. The company paid the charge in huge amount. So, the money was spent for funeral expenses.
One by one, family and friends said their condolences and goodbyes. Kirana could not believe what was happening. She shook every outstretched hand without saying a word. Not even thank you. When all the guests were gone, Brian asked them to come back home. Her feet moved automatically, following them to the car that parked not far away from the graveyard gate.
The house felt empty without family and friends accompanied them. She smiled when she looked at the pile of garbage bags next to the trash bin in front of the house. The house was clean. The dishes were washed and all the furniture was right in their original position. So that nothing she needed to do to clean the house. Because her friends did it all. Kirana sat on the love seat and sighed quietly.
Edgar and Phoebe ran happily around the house. There were no sadness for the lost of their grandfather and grandmother. No surprise. They just saw their grandparents’ body and never met them in person before. This was her first time met her nephew and niece as well. She usually knew them from the photograph that Ratri sent.
Her older sister changed citizenship since her first child was born. She was so busy that she never came back home. But, Kirana and her parents knew the truth. For her, her family was a disgrace because they did not come from noble family that she could be proud of in front of her husband’s family.
Their father was a civil servant in Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was an honest worker and a role model in his office. Their mother was an ophthalmologist. She was the reason they could have a comfortable house with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It was not a ramshackle house. The community well-respected them. There was nothing wrong with their parents, house or reputation.
What made Ratri felt so low with their family status was beyond Kirana’s understanding.
When she was a little girl, Ratri always dreamed to have a better life. With her beautiful face and perfect attitude, it was easy for her to get a rich boyfriend. She met her husband in one of her friends’ birthday party at a hotel. The next day the man called her. Without any further thinking, Ratri broke up with her boyfriend. Brian was an ideal husband, came from a respected family, and a foreigner. He was British.
Brian’s family never underestimated her family. They were nice and friendly. Even when they attended Brian and Ratri’s wedding in Indonesia. Ratri’s father-in-law was a successful businessman. Of course, they were rich. However, they proudly announced that they and Ratri’s parents were family.
“Ed, Phoebe, take your backpacks. Our taxi will be here soon.” Ratri said with her unnatural English accent.
“Okay, Mom.” They both answered at the same time.
“I’m sorry, Kiki. I can’t help you to handle the rest of Dad and Mom business. I hope you don’t mind.” She said to Kirana. “The children never come to Indonesia. We don’t know when we will come back here. It is a waste if we don’t go to Bali for a holiday.”
“No problem, sis.” Kirana said. She stood up when Ratri come closer.
“All of Dad and Mom’s stuffs are for you. Their money, house or any legacy, all of them were for you. I don’t need it. Brian gives me everything I need.”
“What if there is an inheritance in your name?” She confused.
“Make the title transfer document in your name. Send it to me, I’ll sign it, and then send it back to you.” A honk came from the front of their house.
“Okay.” She weakly agreed. Since they were their parents daughter, she wanted to share it with her. But if she did not want it, she could not force her.
“I hope you are okay and move on. I’ll call you when we are in the hotel.” Ratri hugged Kirana tightly. She released her and smiled. “I may not come again, except for your wedding. For that one, I’m going home. So don’t forget to invite me.”
“I won’t.” Kirana smiled. She stood still after her sister walked out the door.
“Hot tea, no sugar.” Brian put a mug down on the table. Kirana raised her head and looked at her brother-in-law.
“Thanks, Brian.” Her brother-in-law was only two inches taller than she was. Without high heels, she did not need to raise her head too high.
“You’re welcome.” He smiled then walked out the door with two suitcases.
“Goodbye, Aunt Kiki.” Edgar said in his native language. Kirana looked at the dark blue eyes that hypnotized her to smile as big as him.
“Come again, okay?” Kirana said. Edgar nodded and hugged her. She stoked his dark brown hair. The ten years old boy followed his parents to the taxi. Brian came back in to take the last suitcase.
“Thank you for everything, Kiki. Please, come to England. We gladly give you a tour.” Brian said cheerfully. Kirana loved to hear his British accent. His dark brown eyes and dark blue eyes made him looked so handsome. Ratri was very lucky.
“You’re welcome, Brian. Please take care of my sister, niece, and nephew.” She welcomed his hug. Brian kissed her cheek and loosened his hug.
“Will do.” He walked out the house with the suitcase.
“Goodbye, Aunt Kiki.” Phoebe said. Kirana turned her head to look at the little girl. Her gray eyes were shining brightly as she smiled. She hugged Kirana. When she leaned in she could tell that her hair was scented with fresh fruit shampoo.
“Please, come again.” Kirana released her niece.
Together they walked out the house. Kirana hold the girl’s hand until they were close enough to the taxi. Brian stood next to the door and kept it open. Phoebe got into the back seat and her father shut the door. After Brian get into the taxi, the car moved. Edgar and Phoebe waved their hands merrily.
Finally, she was all by herself. No Ratri and her family. No father or mother who welcomed her home with warm hugs and delicious food. She was an orphan. She also had no husband or children like her sister had.
