A child would only make our marriage more complicated. I could not get away from him if we had children. Even though my husband treated me like a queen, I did not confine my intention to get away from him forever. Someday it would be time for me to leave this imprisoning life. I did not mind waiting patiently until the time came.
I got out of bed. In the dressing room, I chose a white shirt, a suit, and dark blue trousers. Hearing the sound of the bathroom door being opened and closed again, I turned around. Hendra entered the closet wearing only a towel on his hip. He was putting on the shirt I gave him, work pants, then I helped him tying his tie. Last, I helped him put on his jacket.
Hendra quickly wore his socks and shoes. I gave him his cell phone and wallet. I held back laughter as I saw him in a hurry. He never rushed to the office. We avoided having sex in the morning because of it. My husband kissed me and hurried out of the room.
All day I spent my time in my special room. Concentrated, I finally finished my fiction novel project. After a long debate with my own conscience about the end of the book, I finally decided to give it a happy-ending. If I desperately made a sad ending for the first book, I would lose some of my loyal readers. Creating a tragic ending story would be hard to be accepted for some readers. I decided to do it in the next book.
I got out of the room just for lunch and enjoyed the afternoon snacks. Yuyun and Abdi reported that everything was fine at home. Couple of minutes before Hendra was home, I came out of the room and made sure dinner was ready to be served. I walked to the front door when I heard the gravel sound from the front of the house. Abdi opened the door and my husband came in with a smile on his face.
“Hi, honey.” He leaned in and kissed my lips.
“Hi.” I said as he pulled back.
“How was your day?” He put his arm around my waist and then he walked up the stairs.
“Great. I’ve finished my first book.” I said cheerfully. He turned to look at me in shock.
“Oh, yeah?” He said. He smiled happily when he saw my happy face.
“I’ll send the website address for you to read it.”
“I’ll start reading it before going to bed,” He promised.
“Let me know what you think about that book, okay.”
In our room, Hendra sat on the edge of the bed and let me opened the knot of his tie. His hands were wrapped around my waist. I smiled as I felt his eyes were on me. I glanced over at him and back toward his tie. When I was done with his tie, I unbuttoned his shirt’s top button.
“Open them all,” He said as I paused after unbuttoning. I looked at him in confusion. My husband smiled meaningfully. “I mean it. Open all of them.”
“You don’t want to eat first?” I knew what his request meant.
“My stomach can wait, my desire can’t.” He smiled.
I chuckled as he lifted me up and carefully laid me down on the bed. He easily made me happy and I fell asleep after he made love to me. I woke up moments later, found myself lying on the bed alone. My husband was not there beside me. Looking at the clock on the small table, I moaned softly. It’s already eight o’clock. We should have had dinner an hour ago.
My protesting stomach groaned noisily, forcing me to hurry up and took a shower. I wore one of the purple dresses with a thin, layered cloth and white cardigan, put on some makeup, and put on a casual white sandal. Hendra ought to be waiting in the dining room. However, he never ate without me when we were both at home. Climbing down the stairs, my forehead creased as I saw the lights in the first floor hall were off. Carefully, I went down the stairs and tried to remember the direction of the switch near the door.
As soon as my feet hit the floor after descending from the last stair, suddenly the room became bright and the people around me congratulated me for my birthday. My heart skipped a beat. Realizing what was going on, I smiled and laughed happily. A birthday cake with a lot of small candle was brought toward me. Darla and Lindsey were holding it. I blew the whole candle out. I guessed, there were thirty candles on the cake. My age.
One by one, the guests wished happy birthday while giving me a gift or a bouquet of flowers. Qiana came with her husband and son, as did Darla and Lindsey. Each of them gave me a gift and a bouquet of flowers. Both in-laws gave me a present. Zach gave me a bouquet of red roses. My parents gave me a gift. I smiled when the last person who approached me was my husband.
“What a pleasant surprise.” I said, amused. He hugged me. I comfortably wrapped my arms around his waist. “So that’s why you seduced me in bed?”
“Do you mean besides because I never stopped wanting you? Yes, it was.” He chuckled as he loosened his hold. “I love you, dear. Once again, happy birthday.”
“Thank you.” I could see the sadness in his eyes because I did not say that I love him, too. Just in a flash. He immediately smiled to cover his disappointment.
“Let’s take our food, before they plundered them all.” Hendra swung his arms around my shoulders.
“You mean me, Hendra?” Zach asked from behind us, pretending to be offended. Hendra and I quickly looked at his plate that mounted with lots of food. We spontaneously laughed. “Go, go! Go away from me!”
My husband and I still giggled as we filled our plates with food. Unable to restrain himself, Hendra put his face closer to me and kissed my lips. I paused for a moment, and then smiled at him. He never kissed me in front of others, but okay. Next, I was the one who tiptoed and kissed his lips. I smiled when I saw he rounded his eyes. Yep. I never took the initiative before in our physical contact. He always was the one who did it.
“That’s how to treat a wife properly, Pa.” Lindsey told her husband. We spontaneously pulled away from each other and turned at them. My face was heating up in shame when at the same time, Hendra put his arm around my waist with proud all over his face. Closely, I buried my face in his chest. I did not know what Lindsey and Eduardo thought after seeing the kiss.
“Hendra, we need to drink coffee together anytime soon and talk about how to conquer wife properly. My dear wife hasn’t stopped complaining because you treat your wife better than I have treated her all this time.” Eduardo pretended to be sad. Lindsey slapped her husband’s arm. I chuckled at them.
“You’ve been married for twenty years, I am the one who should have learned a lot from you, Edu.” My husband said humbly.
“My wife and I don’t agree on that.” Eduardo said meaningfully.
“Papa,” Lindsey protested.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Hendra said sympathetically.
“You’re forgiven only if you come with me to have a cup of coffee.” Eduardo urged. Hendra chuckled and accepted his invitation.
