The splash of water from the bathroom pulled me back into consciousness. I opened my eyes lazily. I glanced at the empty side of the bed on my left and then toward the small clock on the nightstand. Five in the morning. I moaned softly and pushed my body out of the bed. After preparing my husband’s work outfits, Hendra appeared in the doorway of our walk-in closet. He kissed me and I went to the bathroom. A few minutes later, I went out and my husband had been waiting for me.
Understanding what I had to do, I came over and tied his tie. He smiled at me. I raised my head and smiled back. Of all the things he could do, the only thing he needed my help was tying his tie. At first I thought he could not do it by himself. Later on I understood that he wanted to have one thing in which he could depend on me.
Hendra was a very independent man. I had never been obliged to do anything to serve him, he could do everything by himself. Sometimes I chose his work outfits even though he never asked me to do so. Tying a tie was a simple thing, but for him it was intimate.
“I need you to wear your white dress I bought in Paris and the diamond necklace I gave you yesterday.” He wiped the hair that covered my cheek.
“For what?” I asked without stopping my hand tidying his shirt after tying up his tie.
“Do you forget what day is today?” He put his arms around my waist, then pulled my body closer. I frowned.
“Wednesday.” I replied softly. He chuckled. I frowned, did not understand what he was talking about.
“Our wedding anniversary, love. Today we’re married for six years.” Hendra said with a happy tone. I smiled and tilted my head.
“What’s the correlation between that and wearing the white dress?” I asked in confusion.
“We’re going to have dinner at your favorite restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary.” He replied as he kissed the tip of my nose.
“But, Hendra, last night we just celebrated my birthday. Why don’t we just celebrate it at home?” I sighed quietly. After the celebration last night, I really did not want to leave the house.
“After our helpers worked hard to prepare your birthday last night, I wanted to give them a break tonight.” He smiled. Oh. If that was the reason, what could I say? I did want to give some break, too.
“Okay.” I was touched to hear it. “What time are we going to meet at the restaurant?”
“I’ll pick you up here.” He replied. I nodded in agreement. “Thank you for making me happy for these six years, love.” He lowered his head to kiss my lips. I closed my eyes and kissed him back.
“You’ve also made me happy, Hendra.” I said quietly. I did not love him, but he did make me happy with his love.
As soon as Dad told Hendra that I was willing to marry him six years ago, Hendra’s family did not waste even a minute. They hired the best event organizer in our city to prepare everything needed for our wedding. They paid all the cost for our marriage. The wedding reception was booked in a five-star hotel. Over two thousand invitations were spread. The posh wedding gown was specifically designed and stitched by a famous fashion designer. So was the tuxedo for the groom.
In the middle of his busy life, Hendra made some time to meet me so we could get to know each other. We chose the house along with the furniture together. I was even allowed to choose a car for myself. We also chose our honeymoon trip together. I had been so eager to visit Europe, but when it was in sight, I was not happy at all.
Our marriage matrimony was held in the church where Hendra and his family became permanent congregations. Only family and friends attended the matrimony. The wedding reception also went well. The thousands guests that came were mostly Hendra’s family acquaintances. It was the first time that I had met the important and famous people in our country on the same day.
Since the afternoon I saw Aldo kissing another woman, since then I did not want to see him. Wounded with his betrayal, I retaliated by not giving him any explanation why I decided to end our relationship. He even became the first person who got my wedding invitation.
Of course he chose to come to my wedding with the woman he kissed. Because my husband accepted their congratulations with a happy face, I did the same. I was not going to let Aldo and his affair won by letting them hurt me again.
The following afternoon we took a flight for our honeymoon. Our first destination was Paris. Hendra thought that I might enjoy our first night in that romantic city. I forced myself to surrender my body to a man I did not love. Although he did not hurt me, I cried after having sex, while he slept soundly by my side.
I deeply regretted the decision I took. Deciding to marry Hendra without thinking had made my life miserable. It was the biggest mistake I had ever made. And I never wanted to do it again.
I would never make any important decisions in a state of anger or sadness. And until this minute I did not do it again. The result of a decision taken in an emotional state and in a hurry had brought great regret in my life. I could not fix it because Hendra would never divorce me. Forever I would be in this marriage without love.
“Oh. I almost forgot something.” He stopped when he almost reach the doorknob. “Dad and Mom invited us to have lunch to celebrate our wedding day. We didn’t need to bother the helpers, we eat in a restaurant near my office. Can you join us?”
“Your Dad and Mom or mine?” I asked because we called both our parents with the same terms.
“Mine.” He chuckled, realized that we always made that same mistake. I smiled.
“Of course, I’ll come.” I agreed. In the afternoon I had no appointment with anyone. I usually was just having lunch with my three best friends, and that was not this day.
“Do you want me to pick you up?” He offered. I shook my head.
“No, thank you. I can go there by myself. After all, I have an appointment today with my dermatologist.”
“Everything’s done, then.” His smile widened.
